Grandpa appears in the introduction of the game after you complete making your character. He seems to be on his deathbed, and tells the player that he has a letter for them, but only to open it when they are ready to. Through the introduction, the player opens the letter Grandpa gave them and is given the deed to the Farm.

In the top left corner of your farm, you will find grandpa's shrine. There is a note that says:

"Wait for my return at the dawn of your third year."

On Spring 1, Year 3, Grandpa will come back to evaluate the player's progress in Stardew Valley. The shrine will light up with a number of candles, the numbers of candles lit is directly linked to Grandpa's evalutation. Re-entering the house at any time will trigger a cutscene.

If all four candles are lit, the player can claim the Statue of Perfection at the shrine.

The player can be re-evaluated at any time, if they place a diamond in the Shrine. This will cause Grandpa to show up again the first day after a game load, or the first day of the next season.

Grandpa's evaluation is based on a point system, based on various milestones reached during the gameplay. There are a total of 19 available points and it takes 12 points to get the Statue of Perfection.
